Broner invokes rematch clause for Maidana fight

broner8583Earlier today, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said that former WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) would be exercising his rematch clause in order to get an immediate rematch against Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s), who beat him by a 12 round unanimous decision on December 14th last month in San Antonio, Texas. The rematch will be on either April 19th or April 26th, according to Schaefer.

By exercising his rematch clause, Broner basically forces Maidana to either give him an immediate rematch or he would have to vacate his title. Maidana obviously is going to defend his title against Broner unless Floyd Mayweather Jr. gives him a fight. In that case, Maidana will likely vacate or have the title stripped from him by the World Boxing Association.

There would also be a possibility that Maidana could get permission by the WBA to fight Mayweather, who holds the WBC welterweight title, in a unification bout. Those types of fights take precedence over normal title defenses.

“My mind is set on war,” said Broner to Dan Rafael of ESPN. “I had a bad night. He was the better man that night, but he didn’t beat me. He out-hustled me…I’m ready to go back to war and get my belt back. They created a monster; woke up a monster.”

Broner was beaten and not just out-hustled by Maidana. Broner was knocked down twice in the fight and he took some really vicious shots in that fight, and he really didn’t get into the fight until the later part when Maidana got a little tired. However, Broner still took a lot of hard punches to the head even in the last three rounds. He was knocked down in the 2nd and 8th rounds by left hooks by Maidana.

One of the biggest knocks on Broner is he’s got too much ego for his own good. He’s one of the more confident fighters that you’ll ever see, and this confidence may end up hurting him badly for the Broner fight because this is a fight that Broner probably shouldn’t be taking a gain. He doesn’t have the game to beat Maidana, and he’ll only get beaten for a second time if he gets in the ring with him again in April.
