By Greg Aspen: WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) has heard a lot about the power of his opponent Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) for their fight on December 14th, but Broner’s not ready to give Maidana his unconditional respect. For Maidana, he’s going to have to earn it in the ring by proving that he’s got the talent to land his shots against the usually defensive-minded Broner.
Broner and Maidana will be fighting on Showtime from the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. It’s an interesting venue picked out by Golden Boy Promotions, and it looks like they’ve selected this venue to take advantage of the large Hispanic population in the city and surrounding area.
Ricardo Alvarez, an older brother of former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be fighting on the undercard against Rod Salka. Golden Boy also has WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz facing Cesar Seda, welterweight Jesus Soto Karass battling Keith Thurman, super middleweight Jermain Taylor facing Juan Carlos Candelo, bantamweight Rau’she Warren fighting Jose Silveira and WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov defending his title against challenger Tamas Kovacs.
Broner said “Maidana has to show me-he has to make me respect his power and his boxing skills. You never know. When I make my adjustments inside the ring December 14th, then I’ll do what I have to do to get my victory. Maidana, he’s definitely a proven hard-hitting puncher, but he’s got to hit me. It’s not like I’m going to let him hit me. He’s got to hit me.”
Maidana is definitely going to have to get on top of Broner and really let his hands go if he wants to have a chance of landing his shots and winning this fight. Broner is exceptional at making his opponents miss with their punches, and he seems to have the Floyd Mayweather Jr. shoulder roll defense down to an art. Broner prides himself on making his opponents miss with their shots, and he does especially well against guys that load up on their shots like Maidana. This doesn’t mean that Broner will do well against Maidana, but he could very well make it tough on him.
