In what could be a fight to determine Floyd Mayweather Jr’s September opponent, Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) and Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) will mix it up on 5/3 in a fight that will be televised by Showtime PPV at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Khan-Collazo fight, which will be taking place right before the main event between Mayweather and Marcos Maidana, seems to be a fight that Golden Boy Promotions is angling to pick out the next opponent for Mayweather in September.
You kind of knew the Khan-Collazo fight would wind up taking place after Collazo pulled off an upset in defeating former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz by a 1st round knockout last January, and after Collazo subsequently signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions afterwards. Golden Boy is similar to Top Rank in the fact that they have a lot of in house fights matching their own fighters against each other rather than putting them in with guys from other promotional companies.
Collazo is kind of an interesting case due to him having been out of the loop for so long following his defeat at the hands of Andre Berto in 2009. Collazo was a guy that was among the top welterweights in the division from 2006-2009, but after his defeat at the hands of Berto, he dropped off the face of the earth and stopped fighting good opposition. Collazo’s recent win over the badly tarnished Victor Ortiz, who was coming off of a 1 ½ year layoff at the time of the fight last January, was enough of a reason to use Collazo as Khan’s next opponent for the Mayweather fight card.
Collazo is seen as someone who is safe for Khan, because if they wanted to match Khan up against someone that would be better known to fans and have a better chance at making it a competitive fight, Golden Boy would have put Khan in with Keith Thurman or Devon Alexander. Obviously, those guys were seen as too dangerous for Khan, because if they beat him then you could say goodbye to a future Khan-Mayweather fight. That’s a potentially big money fight that Golden Boy would do well with. Thurman, Alexander or even Shawn Porter are guys that don’t bring as much to the table as Khan does. That’s why you’re seeing Khan face an old guy like Collazo. They want a safe fight for Khan.
“Both Amir Khan and Luis Collazo have made it known that they want a shot at the winner of the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana, so what better way for them to prove that they’re next in line than by fighting on “THE MOMENT” card on May 3?” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. “These are two exciting former world champions and this fight has the potential to steal the show.”
What’s going to be really funny is to see how Golden Boy dances around in coming up with an excuse for why Collazo won’t get a fight against Mayweather if Khan loses to Collazo on May 3rd. This fight isn’t about picking out one of the two fighters to face Mayweather in September, but rather Khan being picked out. This is Khan’s night and he’s the only one here who has a chance to get the Mayweather fight despite what Schaefer says about both guys looking to get the fight. Collazo will never get a fight against Mayweather, because he’s too old and he’s been out of the main stream for too many years.
