Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) showed tonight that he still has a lot left in the tank at 40 in beating Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Marquez fought clever in using his jab, and combinations to the head and body to earn an impressive decision in their WBO welterweight title eliminator.
The only round of the fight that you could conclusively give to Alvarado was the 9th, and that was the round in which he knocked Marquez down. Alvarado came close to getting a knockdown in the 11th after he staggered Marquez with a big shot. Marquez knocked Alvarado down in the 8th round from a big right. Alvarado showed a lot of courage in getting up from that knockdown because he looked really badly hurt.
The judges scored it 117-109, 117-109, and 119-108.
Alvarado really didn’t come alive until the last four rounds of the fight, and at that point he got into some big exchanges with Marquez. Unfortunately, Alvarado didn’t have nearly as many exchanged as he needed to in order to have a chance at winning the fight.
Alvarado had problems with his left eye swelling up and then getting cut. But his main problem was trying to land anything without getting nailed. Marquez was countering Alvarado all night long, and this made Alvarado gun-shy to say the least. He didn’t want to dive in the way he needed to for him to have a chance at winning. The sad thing is that when Alvarado finally did start letting his hands go in the last four rounds of the fight, he didn’t do all that bad.
Alvarado’s power clearly bothered the smaller Marquez, and if Alvarado had just stepped on the canvas by throwing more sustained combinations, he might have had a chance to win the fight. At the very least, Alvarado would have made it a lot closer than it turned out to be. The fight was pretty one-sided if you ignore the knockdown that Alvarado scored in the 9th round.
The win now puts Marquez in as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent if Marquez wants the fight. He’s already fought Pacquiao four times previously, and Marquez said after their last fight in 2012 that he didn’t want to fight him again. But it looks like he’s changed his mind due to him wanting to win a 5th division world title.
