By Luke Penhasi: To know great surprise, former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (45-5, 27 KO’s) was able to use his superior size and power to defeat the much smaller and older 42-year-old Shane Mosley (48-8-1, 39 KO’s) by a 6th round stoppage on Wednesday night in junior middleweight action at the All Phones Arena in Sydney, Australia.
Mundine, 38, became the first fighter to stop Mosley when he couldn’t come out for the 7th round due to lower back spasms. Mosley had been troubled by the back problems from the 4th round after falling down while attempting to clinch Mundine. It looked like Mosley slipped during the process of grabbing Mundine, and when he got back to his feet he reached for his lower back and grimaced with pain. In between rounds, Mosley’s corner worked on his back to try and loosen it up but it didn’t help.
Mundine used his jab and right hands to control Mosley. He didn’t throw a lot of shots, but the ones that Mundine did throw were powerful and they definitely got Mosley’s attention. Mosley landed a good right hand to the head of Mundine in the 4th round that sent him reeling briefly. However, Mundine was able to turn the tables on Mosley in the 2nd half of the round to dominate the action.
After the bout, Mundine called out Floyd Mayweather Jr., a fighter that Mundine has been chasing for quite some time. Mundine moved down in weight from the super middleweight division to the junior middleweight division in hopes of getting a fight with Mayweather before he retires, but thus far he’s been ignored by him due in part because of Mundine’s lack of quality opposition at 154. For Mundine to somehow get Mayweather’s attention, he’ll have to fight often and against the best fighters.
The type of fighters that Mundine would have to beat in order to have a chance to get a fight against Mayweather are guys like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, Keith Thurman, Adrien Broner, Devon Alexander, Tim Bradley, Vanes Martirosyan and Austin Trout. At 38, Mundine doesn’t have a lot of time to try and get a fight against the 37-year-old Mayweather.
