Pacquiao: Let’s forget about Mayweather for now

pac983With Floyd Mayweather Jr’s latest request for him to leave his promoter Bob Arum before he’ll consider fighting him, Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he’s going to forget about a fight against Mayweather for the time being and focus on guys that he can fight for the remainder of the year. Pacquiao believes that Mayweather’s request for him to leave his promoter Bob Arum is a sign that Mayweather doesn’t want to fight him. He feels that it’s fear showing it’s ugly head with Mayweather, because that’s not how a fighter acts when he wants to fight someone.

“He really looks like he does not want to fight me, so I think there’s nothing we can do about it already,” Pacquiao said via “Let’s forget about the Mayweather fight for the meantime.”

Forgetting about the Mayweather fight might be a smart thing for Pacquiao to do right now because the odds of him getting a fight against him are extremely bad after Mayweather said that he won’t fight him until he leaves Arum. There is a chance that this could change if Mayweather’s fight on May 3rd does poor numbers on pay-per-view. We saw Mayweather agree to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September after his ill-advised fight against Robert Guerrero brought in poor PPV numbers in May of last year.

It was thought that Showtime had put pressure on Mayweather to fight Canelo in order for them to recoup some of the money that they lost in the Mayweather-Guerrero fight. It’s thought that Mayweather’s fights on Showtime/CBS need to bring in at least 1.1 million PPV buys in order for Showtime/CBS to make a profit for each fight. Mayweather is being linked with Amir Khan for his next fight on May 3rd, and that’s a fight that will likely bring in considerably less than 1 million PPV buys. If it does really badly then we might see Mayweather bending under pressure and agreeing to fight Pacquiao.

If Mayweather decides to wait for Pacquiao to leave Arum before agreeing to fight him then there’s a chance that the fight may not happen, because one gets the sense that Pacquiao doesn’t trust that he’ll get the fight against Mayweather if he leaves Arum.
