By Greg Aspen: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer will be meeting with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next week to decide on his next opponent for March 8th next year. They were hoping to get Miguel Cotto accept the fight, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen now. Schaeer offered Cotto over $10 million to fight Canelo, but he’s failed to respond back to Schaefer in the affirmative to say whether he’ll agree to take the fight. In the meantime, there is talk that Cotto received an even bigger off from Top Rank for him to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on June 7th.
Cotto has said that he wants to fight for a world title at 160 in order to try and win a 4th division world title. I guess it’s now or never for the 33-year-old Cotto, because he can’t sit around and wait forever before trying to fight for a middleweight title. Cotto’s other options against middleweight champions Gennady Golovkin, Peter Quillin and Darren Barker aren’t as good because those guys are younger than Martinez and either taller or younger.
“I’m going to see Canelo next week in San Antonio,” Schaefer said to RingTV. “So, I’m planning on discussing with him where we stand. Then, very swiftly, thereafter, I would say, within days, we’ll announce who it will be. I’m waiting on Miguel Cotto, and if that doesn’t happen, then we’ll look at what the other possibilities are. Carlos Molina for the IBF world title is one of them.”
The options that Schaefer has for Canelo aren’t that great. If he can’t the Cotto fight, Schaefer is offering Canelo a fight for a title against IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina or the winner of the Erislandy Lara vs. Austin Trout fight. Those two fighters are competing for the vacant WBA 154 lb. title this Saturday at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Canelo would have the opportunity to fight one of them for the WBA title, but it would be a tough fight and it wouldn’t be a situation where Canelo is fighting a popular fighter. That’s the case for the Molina fight as well. Cotto is the best option for Canelo, but there’s not much Schaefer can do if Cotto doesn’t want to take the fight.
