The Arizona Cardinals (10-5) pulled off a huge victory in defeating the Seattle Seahawks (12-3) in their own home stadium on Sunday by a 17-10 score to keep their faint playoff hopes a live at the CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington. The victory for the Cardinals keeps them just behind the San Francisco 49ers (10-4) in the NFC West. The 49ers play this Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.
If the 49ers lose the game, then the Cardinals will be tied with them for 2nd play and it’ll go down to the final game of the season to determine which of these two teams will make it to the playoffs. The Seahawks were hoping to clinch the NFC West division with a victory over the Cardinals, but instead they’re going to need to win their final game of the season next week for them to finish first. If they lose the game and the 49ers win, then the Niners will finish in a tie with them for 1st place.
The Seahawks went up 10-9 with 7:26 left in the game after getting an 11-yard touchdown throw from quarterback Russell Wilson to Zach Miller. However, Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer took them down the field starting on their on 20-yard line with 7:26 remaining and marched them down to the Seahawks 31-yard line. At that point, Palmer threw a beautiful 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Floyd with 2:13 left in the game to make it 15-10. Cardinals running back Rashad Mendenhall then ran the ball in for a 2-point conversion to make it 17-10.
The Seahawks got the ball back with 1:58 left in the game. However, Russell Wilson’s pass on 1st down was picked off by Karlos Dansby. The Cardinals then ran out the clock to preserve the victory. Wilson’s pass was intended for a wide open Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin, but the ball was badly under thrown and it rebounded off his hand and flew into the arms of Dansby for an interception.
Palmer made a lot of mistakes in the game. He had 4 passes picked off. 2 of them were interception by Richard Sherman, 1 by Kam Chancellor and 1 by Malcolm Smith.
For the Seahawks, this loss ends their 14-game home winning streak which stretches into last season.
The Cardinals will be playing the 49ers next Sunday at home at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
Russell Wilson had a horrible game in completing 11 of 27 passes for 108 yards with 1 touchdown, 1 interception and 4 sacks. Wilson had a hard time hitting open receivers. One of the problems is the heavy pass rush by the Cardinals defensive front. He was constantly scurrying around being forced to throw on the run. He ran the ball twice for 32 yards, but he needed to run a lot more than that for the Seahawks to have a chance to win this game.
In a wasted opportunity, the Seahawks were unable to score at the end of the 1st half after Malcolm Smith intercepted a pass from Palmer and he returned it to the 3-yard line of the Cardinals. The Seahawks tried to bunch the ball in but they were stuffed twice. Finally they attempted a field goal, but Seahawks kicker Steven Hauschka shockingly missed a short 24-yard chip shot from point blank range.
