Chiefs top Browns 23-17

chiefs56By Greg Stiller: The Kansas City Chiefs (8-0) won their 8th straight game of the season today in defeating the Cleveland Browns 23-17 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. For the Chiefs, this is their 2nd best ever start of a season. This is pretty impressive from a team that was just hoping to win 8 games this season after a terrible 2-14 season.

The Chiefs led 20-10 at halftime, but the Brown, led by quarterback Jason Campbell, came back to make it 23-17 in the 2nd half. To their credit, the Chiefs defense rose up and were able to shut the Browns down for no points in the 4th quarter despite Campbell throwing the football on every down.

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith completed 24 of 36 passes for 225 yards with 2 touchdowns. Smith also rushed for 40 yard on six carries. He had touchdown passes of 12 yards to Anthony Sherman in the 2nd quarter to put the Chiefs up 13-0, and 28 yards in the 2n d quarter to Dexter McCluster to wide the Chiefs lead to 20-7.

Browns Jason Campbell, making his first start as a Browns player, completed 22 of 36 passes for 293 yards with 2 touchdowns, just 1 sack and no interceptions. He was pretty impressive for a player who hadn’t started a game since 2012. Campbell had a 39-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver Josh Gordon in the 2nd quarter. He also had a 17-yard TD throw to Fozzy Whittaker in the 3rd quarter.

Gordon is expected to be traded to another team by next Tuesday’s trade deadline. He caught 5 passes for 132 yards in the game with 1 touchdown. The Brows would like to keep Gordon but he’s one of the few players on their team that there’s a high demand for from other teams and they could really use him.

Campbell’s touchdown throw to Gordon came after he handed the ball off to running back Willis McGahee. Instead of running the ball, McGahee threw the football back to Campbell, who then tossed a nice 39-yard touchdown to a wide open Gordon.

Browns tight end Jordan Cameron caught 4 passes for 81 yards.

Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster caught 7 passes for 67 yards. Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles caught 5 passes for 46 yards.

Charles rushed for 74 yards on 18 carries.
