By Matt Fisk: The New York Giants (2-6) picked up their 2nd win of the season in defeating the Philadelphia Eagles (3-5) on Sunday at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The game was decided on the kicking of Giants kicker Josh Brown with his five field goals in the game.
The Eagles were unable to get their normally explosive offense in gear, as quarterback Michael Vick was ineffective as the starter due to his hamstring problem. In the 2nd half, Eagles head coach Chip Kelly benched Vick in place of rookie QB Matt Barkley. That seemed to help the Eagels a little bit, as they scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter to make it 15-7. The Eagles were unable to use Nick Foles to replace Vick because he’s still recovering from a concussion he sustained last week in the Eagles 17-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Vick completed 6 of 9 passes for just 31 yards with 1 interception. However, he was unable to scramble around due to his hamstring problem and he looked terrible in trying to throw in the pocket. That’s just not his style of playing.
Barkley played a lot better in completing 17 of 26 passes for 158 yards with 1 interception and 3 sacks. He was good at completing the short passes, but he didn’t have the arm strength to throw the medium to long passes in the game.
Giants running back Peyton Hillis rushed for 70 yards on 20 carries.
Eagles running back LeSean McCoy had another poor game in rushing for just 48 yards on 15 carries for a 3.2 yards per carry average. His stats have been doing downhill lately with the teams keying on him more now that they know that the Eagles are getting terrible production from their quarterbacks.
Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz caught 7 passes for 86 yards with a long of 26 yards. Hakeem Nicks caught 7 passes for 51 yards. Brandon Myers caught 3 catches for 42 yards.
Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson caught 8 passes for 63 yards. Jason Avant caught 3 passes for 54 yards.
The Eagles are going to need to let Vick rest until his hamstring has healed because he’s not going to be effective if they have him playing before his hamstring injury has fully healed. If they do that then he’s going to be hurt for a real long time. Barkley right now is the best thing they have going for them because Foles is still nursing a concussion, and we saw how he mentally fell apart when he was given the starting job against the Cowboys. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He wasn’t ready for that kind of pressure and he crumbled mentally from the strain. Barkley is used to being in the limelight given that he played for USC, a major football power.
