Harbaugh thinks Kaepernick played well against Saints

kaepernick5423By Mike Torney: The San Francisco 49ers (6-4) lost their second straight game last Sunday in their 23-20 defeat to the New Orleans Saints. 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick seemingly was one of the biggest reasons for the Niners defeat due to his inability to complete passes and move the Niners down the field during the game.

Again and again, Kaepernick ignored wide open receivers and instead threw to guys that were covered or he took good running and was immediately tackled for little gain. What is surprising is that the Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh, instead of pointing out the obvious about how Kaepernick played poorly, instead blew smoke up his backside by smothering him with compliments for his poor play.

Harbaugh told the Sacramento Bee “I thought Colin played very well, very accurate. He was fighting, just like everybody. Very aggressive, a lot of big-time throws.”

I’m not one to blow smoke up someone’s backside if they’ve played terribly, and that’s why I’m stunned that Harbaugh is saying nothing but good stuff about Kaepernick after this latest performance because Harbaugh really should be telling Kaepernick about how horribly he played and he should be giving him a stern warning that unless he improves immediately, he’ll end up getting benched by him. It’s not as if Harbaugh hasn’t already given Kaepernick plenty of time to turn things around because he’s played poorly in the Niners last 5 games and that’s just way too many games for a quarterback to be played terribly.

Kaepernick completed 17 of 31 passes for 127 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception against the Saints. He completed 54.8 percent of his passes against the Saints. That’s now what I would call as being an “very accurate,” as Harbaugh described him. To me, completing only 54 percent of your throws is a sign of a quarterback who isn’t accurate with his throws.

I think it’s time for Harbaugh to start showing Kaepernick some tough love to let him know that if he wants to remain the starting quarterback for the Niners then he’s going to need to start performing like a starting quarterback, because right now Kaepernick is playing like a 3rd stringer.
