Kirk Cousins with good opportunity for big game against Falcons secondary

cousins7By Carlos Jones: Quarterback Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins is in a good situation to have a big game this Sunday in his first start of the season against the Atlanta Falcons (3-10) at the Georgiadome in Atlanta, GA. First off, the Falcons are a terrible team this season and nothing like the team that made it all the way to the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers last season.

The Falcons still have a fairly strong offense, but their defense is like putty and vulnerable to say the least, especially in the secondary. The Falcons have three rookie defensive backs that Cousins will be throwing against in Zeke Motta, Robert Alford and Desmond Trufant.

There’s nothing wrong with teams starting rookie defensive backs, because quite frequently the younger rookie cornerbacks and safeties are still very good players. But in this case we’re not talking about 1st or 2nd round draft pick defensive backs that the Falcons have starting for them. Tha talent that they currently have in their secondary is marginal, and it’s going to give Cousins a great chance to hit the ground running in this start.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was benched for the remainder of the season by head coach Mike Shanahan for what appears to be his poor play, although that’s not the reason Shanahan gave for benching him. He points to RG3′s 25 sacks he’s taken in the last 5 games as the reason for pulling RG3 out of the lineup for the remainder of the season.

The Redskins final three games of the season will be against the Falcons this Sunday, Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. Those are three teams with weak defenses and it’s going to give Cousins a great chance of putting up three huge games to end the season. If we see Cousins throw for more than 300 yards in all three games, then you can bet that the Redskins will have a quarterback controversy in 2014. Even if the owner of the Redskins Daniel Snyder fires Shanahan in the off season, the coach that replaces him will still be presented with the situation whether to start RG3 and put up with his poor play or stick with the better pocket passer in Cousins and watch the redskins win games with him as the starter.
