The Dallas Cowboys (8-7) needed a 4th quarter to defeat the Washington Redskins (3-12) by a 24-23 score on Sunday at the FedEx Field in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The victory keeps the Cowboys within reach of the 1st place Philadelphia Eagles (8-6), who are playing tonight against the Chicago Bears.
Things were looking bleak for the Cowboys in the 4th quarter today, as they were down 23-14 and the Redskins were trying to run out the clock. In hindsight, the Redskins made the mistake of getting too conservative with too much time remaining in the game, and that ended up costing them the game with the Cowboys coming back an eliminating the Redskins 9 point deficit to beat them by a 24-23 score.
Why the Redskins chose to play conservatively with 12 minutes left in the game is anyone’s guess, but I guess that’s why they’re such a poor team. It’s coaching decisions like that which ends up biting a team like the Redskins in the backside every time.
On a 4th down and 10 on the Redskins 10-yard line with 1:08 left in the game, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo tossed a 10 yard touchdown pass to running back DeMarco Murray to put the Cowboys up 24-23 for the victory.
Earlier in that series, Romo threw a long 51-yard completion to rookie receiver Terrance Williams that put the Cowboys on the Redskins 21-yard line. Romo had to scramble right to make the play, and he did a great job of eluding the Redskins pass rush to get the ball off.
The Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins had a horrible second half, as he seemed to melt under the pressure of the Cowboys coming back. To be sure, the Redskins were calling a lot of running plays that made it hard for Cousins to get in his rhythm, but he just looked stressed out and not in the game the crucial point in the 4th quarter.
Cousins completed 21 of 36 passes for 197 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
Romo completed 17 of 27 passes for 226 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray rushed for 96 yards on 22 carries with 1 touchdown. He also caught 3 passes for 15 yards.
Redskins running back Alfred Morris rushed for 88 yards on 24 carries with 1 touchdown.
Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon caught 11 passes for 144 yards.
