To many boxing fans Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) is a poor potential opponent for the next fight of Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) on May 3rd, but that’s not how WBC Executive Secretary Mauricio Sulaiman sees him. He believes that Khan an appealing opponent for Floyd. I guess we should expect that given that the World Boxing Council has Khan ranked at #3 by their sanctioning body rater than near the bottom.
Khan has only fought once at welterweight in beating Julio Diaz by a close 12 round unanimous decision at a catch-weight of 143 lbs. last April. That was hardly the type of opponent – or performance – that you would think would lead to Khan getting a #3 ranking by the WBC.
“Amir is a very interesting potential opponent for Floyd,” Mauricio said to the WBC website. “Amir’s a big star in the UK and he can punch. However, only when we see both of them up in the ring, will we appreciate if Khan really is a good rival for Floyd.”
Khan is a more interesting option than some of the other guys that the WBC has ranked in their top 15, that’s for sure. The WBC has Luis Carlos Abregu at #2, and that would be a dreadful fight between him and Mayweather. It’s not that Abregu isn’t a better fighter than Khan, because I believe he would beat him, but he’s a slow fighter that would be tailor-made for Mayweather to whip badly. Khan is a better option than contenders such as Devon Alexander, Kell Brook, Paulie Malignaggi and Robert Guerrero. But he’s not as interesting as guys like Marcos Maidana, Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman.
Mayweather still might not end up fighting Khan because it seems as if he and his team are weighing the options of fighting Maidana next instead of Khan. Maidana brings a more exciting fighting style, with better power than Khan, and he’s coming off of a big win over Broner. Maidana brings in the Hispanic fans, due to him being from Argentina. 4,600 miles separates Argentina from Mexico, but they speak the same language and if Hispanic fans in the U.S were to pick between Khan and Maidana in which fight to show interest in as a potential opponent for Mayweather, it’s likely they would be more interest in seeing Maidana as the guy that faces Mayweather than Khan.
The negative thing about Khan is he’s lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and not beaten a good opponent for 2 years. Julio Diaz used to be a good fighter, but he’s considered to be over-the-hill by a lot of fans. As such, beating him proved nothing by Khan, and he didn’t even do a good job in beating him. The win was unimpressive to say the least, as Khan was knocked down once in the 4th and staggered three times in the fight.
