Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s 6-year-old touchdown mark with 51 touchdown passes in the Broncos 37-13 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. Manning tied Brady’s mark with a 20-yard TD throw to Erick Decker in the 4th quarter to put the Broncos up 30-13 with 6:57 left in the game.
Then with just 4:28 remaining, Manning thew a 25-yard touchdown pass to Julius Thomas to break the record at 51 touchdown passes. Texans interim head coach Wade Phillips says he was a little surprised to see Manning still throwing the ball into the end zone late in the game with the Broncos up by 17 points. In other words, it looked like Manning was just looking to break the record rather than throwing the ball when he needed to throw it.
For Manning, this is the 2nd time he’s held the single season touchdown record. He previously set the record at 49 touchdown passes in the 2004 season while playing for the Indianapolis Colts. The record stood for 3 seasons until Tom Brady broke it in the 2007 season with 50 touchdown passes.
The Texans lost their 13th straight game and it’s unclear what the team can do in the off season to try and turn things around. The owner already fired head coach Gary Kubiak, and he’s using Wade Phillips as the interim head coach until he can find someone to take the job. It doesn’t look like he’s going to give the job to Phillips. Whoever gets the job, I’d be surprised if they keep it for long because this team looks like it’s going to be a bad for years to come.
In addition to the touchdown record, Manning has now passed for 5,211 yards this season, which for him is a career-high total. He’s within 265 yards of breaking the all-time mark of 5,476 yards set 2 years ago by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees in 2011. It’s quite possible that Manning will break that record next week against the Oakland Raiders, who have a terrible secondary and have given up huge yardage to a lot of different quarterbacks this season.
Manning completed 32 of 51 passes for 400 yards with 4 touchdown passes and 1 sack.
Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub completed 18 of 37 passes for 176 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions and 3 sacks. Schaub was playing in place of injured quarterback Case Keenum, who suffered a torn ligament in his thumb last Sunday.
Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno rushed for 76 yards on 11 carries.
Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker caught 10 passes for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns. Demaryius Thomas caught 8 passes for 123 yards and 1 touchdown. Julius Thomas had 6 catches for 78 yards.
Texans receiver Ryan Griffin caught 5 passes for 66 yards. Andre Johnson had 4 catches for 63 yards.
